Gospel preacher and Miss America 1980 Cheryl Prewitt Salem has announced the release of her latest book, "From Grief to Glory, How to Rediscover Life After Grief" (Whitaker House Publishing), which was co-authored by her husband, Harry Salem. They have also co-written "Mourning to Morning" in honor of their late daughter, Gabrielle Christian Salem, who died in 1999 at age 6. The Mississippi native now lives in Oklahoma, where she has been a successful singer, clothes merchandiser, community activist, and mother of two sons. Marjorie Bong Drucker, who went from homecoming queen to World War II "nose art" queen, then became a successful model after personal tragedy, died Sept 27, 2003, at age 79. The North Dakota native, born Marjorie Vattendahl, was the outgoing homecoming queen at Superior Teachers College in Michigan when she met and dated military aviator Richard I. Bong in 1943. When he returned to combat, he put her picture on his plane rather than one of the pinup girl paintings known during the war as "nose art." And when Bong became the top U.S. air ace of the war, his girlfriend's image became famous throughout the United States. After he returned from the front, the two had a storybook marriage and socialized with movie stars, but Bong was killed in an air crash a few months later. The 21-year-old widow gradually built a career as a model and fashion writer. She met publisher Murray Drucker on a modeling assignment a few years later, and she eventually married him, raised a family and became a successful publisher herself. She was widowed for a second time in 1991. Miss America 1995, Heather Leigh Whitestone McCallum of Alabama, has released her new book, "Let God Surprise You," which she co-authored with Angela Hunt. The book focuses on "how God supplies the means to overcome adversity and conflict, and bestows blessings of love, children, ministry, beauty and forgiveness." Pageant star turned movie star Halle Berry has separated from her husband, entertainer Eric Benet. No plans for a divorce have been announced. The couple did not say why they separated, but there have been published reports that Benet had extramarital affairs. Ms. Berry was previously married to baseball star David Justice.
Kristina Hughes, Miss Connecticut USA 1998, is filming a thriller in Montana, tentatively titled "New Moon." Monique Jones, Miss Massachusetts Teen USA 2000, is one of eight finalists in the Sports Illustrated Fresh Faces Swimsuit Model Contest. The search is featured in the current issue of the magazine, and that led to several TV appearances. Leigh-Taylor Smith, Miss Teen Virginia 2003, and Tanya Matney, Mrs. Virginia 2002, will be at The Club at Fiji Island in Roanoke, Va., on Oct. 4, 2003, to sign autographs and participate in the "Evening with the Masters of the Blues" benefit concert. They will be on the patio at 6:30 p.m. The entertainment world lost two of its most beloved personalities, both with pageant connections, barely hours apart in early September 2003. Singer Johnny Cash, one of the few performers in both the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame, died Sept. 12 in Nashville after years of ill health. He was the great-uncle of Kellye Michelle Cash Sheppard, who was Miss Tennessee 1986 and Miss America 1987. Her father, retired Navy captain Roy Cash, Jr., is the son of Johnny Cash's brother, Roy Cash, Sr., who was also a singer. Hours before Cash's death, actor and comic John Ritter died suddenly on Sept. 11 of a previously undiagnosed heart condition. He had just finished taping the third episode of his popular sitcom "8 Simple Rules . . . For Dating My Teenage Daughter," which starts its second season on Sept. 23. Coincidentally, his father, the late actor and cowboy singer Tex Ritter, introduced Johnny Cash to millions on his popular television program "Ranch Party" in the 1950s. John Ritter was best known to many as Jack Tripper on the hit sitcom "Three's Company" where he played the love interest to Victoria (Vicky) Bradford played by Mary Therese Cadorette, who was Miss Connecticut 1975. Her role on the show catapulted her into roles on many television series, including 1984's "Three's a Crowd," a spinoff of "Three's Company." She later played lawyer Margaret Turner on "Night Court" and made guest appearances on "JAG," "Who's the Boss," and "ER." She currently lives in California, where she works as a public relations consultant. Also appearing on "Three's Company" was former pageant winner Jenilee Harrison, who played Cindy Snow on the show. The California-born Ms. Harrison won the title of Miss Young America at age 17 and later became a Los Angeles Rams cheerleader. Former America's Junior Miss 1962 and ABC anchorwoman Diane Sawyer hosted a one-hour network tribute show about Ritter on Sept. 15, 2003.
Network officials have confirmed the PNB report that former Georgia beauty queen Amy Robach is joining MSNBC as an anchor. The good-natured Ms. Robach still laughs at her pageant nickname, "The Goddess of Love," coined by PNB photographer Joe Whiteko because of her almost mythological beauty. But she has drawn raves for her abilities as a Washington-based journalist, one of the most respected in the nation's capital.. Laura Corlin, 16, Miss New Hampshire Junior National Teen-Ager, will bring her community service project, "The Difference Music Makes," to the Mall in Washington, D.C., for two performances as part of an international festival planned around Sept. 11, 2003. Her performance will be Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. EDT and on Sept. 11 at the same hour.
Sherry Strother, a prominent contestant, consultant, and judge in the U.S. pageant industry, has written a book titled "Crowning Success, the Ultimate Guide for Mrs. Competition." Among her titles are Mrs. United Nation US 1998 and Mrs. American Renaissance 2003 (which she currently holds). Jinx Falkenburg, an actress, model and talk show host who was often mistakenly described as a former Miss America, died Aug. 27, 2003, in Manhasset, N.Y. She was 84. Ms. Falkenburg, who was born in Spain and raised in the United States and Latin America, was bilingual and appeared in Spanish-language and English-language Hollywood films in the late 1930s and early '40s. She also entered modeling and became the highest-paid model in the United States by the early '40s. In 1941, she was the first Miss Rheingold, promoting a brand of beer. It was the second most prestigious beauty title in the United States at the time. During World War II, she met journalist Tex McCrary, who was on his way to becoming one of the nation's greatest publicists. After their 1945 marriage, they hosted a show together on a New York radio station, and soon moved to the new medium of television. They were pioneers of the news-oriented talk show, foreshadowing "The Today Show" and others. Because of her Miss Rheingold title and the fact that she was more famous than most Miss Americas, Ms. Falkenburg was sometimes incorrectly identified in news articles as a one-time Miss America winner. Frank Deford noted this phenomenon in his 1971 book "There She Is: The Life and Times of Miss America." Gerdeen Dyer, a newspaperman and co-founder of the Pageant News Bureau, has expressed his own theory about it. "I think people confused her with Bess Myerson, Miss America 1945. There was a physical resemblance. Both were 1940s celebrities who became TV personalities based in New York. And their names had a similar rhythm. 'Bess Myerson,' 'Jinx Falkenburg.' " Ms. Falkenburg's death came less than a month after that of her husband, McCrary. They had been separated for two decades, but remained married and on friendly terms. Denise "Dee" Marie Henderson, who was Mrs. Minnesota International in 1999, has been accused of fraud for allegedly misrepresenting herself as disabled after an auto accident. A civil complaint filed in late August 2003 by federal authorities claims that she received $190,000 improperly over a period of seven years. She was receiving disability benefits at the time of her reign.
The Miss America Organization has announced that 2003 "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken will be the opening number guest star at the 2003 Miss America Pageant, which will air on ABC on Sept. 20, 2003. Aiken, who is from Raleigh, N.C., will sing his hit song "This Is the Night." The pageant has announced that "Hollywood Squares" host Tom Begeron will be the emcee of the 83rd annual pageant in Atlantic City, NJ. He is scheduled to sing the popular "There She Is" to the newly crowned Miss America 2004. Bergeron, a native of New Hampshire, is an Emmy Award-winning host, and it will be the first time he has hosted a pageant. "Access Hollywood" host Nancy Humphries O'Dell, who was Miss South Carolina 1987 and a preliminary swimsuit winner at the 1987 Miss America Pageant, took part in the second annual St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's "Runway for Life" fund-raiser on Aug. 19, 2003, in Beverly Hills, Calif. Marlo Thomas, whose late father, comedian/actor Danny Thomas, was the longtime spokesman for St. Jude's, was the host of the event and also took part in the fashion show, along with fashion model Cindy Crawford and actress Jennifer Aniston. Also among the celebrities was actress Cybill Shepherd, who was Miss Teenage Memphis and Miss Congeniality at the 1966 Miss Teenage America Pageant. Miss Universe 1993, Dayanara Torres Delgado Muniz, and her husband, singer Marc Anthony, have a second son. The former Puerto Rican beauty queen gave birth to Ryan Anthony Muniz on Aug. 16, 2003, on Long Island, N.Y. The couple have a 2-year old son, Cristian. Anthony, whose real name is Marco Antonio Muniz, has a daughter, Arianna, 9, from a previous relationship. The couple, who both judged the 2001 Miss Universe Pageant in their native Puerto Rico, were married May 10, 2000. They renewed their vows in a lavish wedding in San Juan in November 2002. Miss Universe 2003, Amelia Vega, returned to her homeland, the Dominican Republic, on Aug. 16, 2003, for the first time since winning the title on June 3, 2003, in Panama. Her homecoming, which was met by thousands of festive fans and onlookers, coincided with the closing ceremony of the XIV Pan American Games in the capital city of Santo Domingo. She later danced the merengue with President Hipolito Mejia and performed with singer Juan Luis Guerra at the event. During her homecoming visit, which ran through Aug. 22, she was escorted by her mother, Patricia Polanco, and Miss Universe, Inc. President Paula M. Shugart-Allison. Ms. Vega's victory marked the first time the Caribbean island nation had won the Miss Universe title, which dates back to 1952. The Dominican Republic played host to the pageant in 1977. The reigning Miss Switzerland, Nadine Vinzens, has been apprehended for drunken driving. Her driver's license will be suspended for some months and she will be required to pay a fine. This comes on the heels of a recent interview in which she expressed a fondness for cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana.
Miss America 2003, Erika Natali Louise Harold, will again be a guest on MSNBC. The show airs at 7 p.m. EDT on Aug. 9, 2003. She will be a panelist on "Saturday Final," hosted by Lawrence O'Donnell. She appeared a couple of weeks earlier on the same show. Actress Sharon Stone, who was Miss Crawford County 1976 and a contestant in the 1976 Miss Pennsylvania (America) Pageant, has announced her separation from her husband, newspaper executive Phil Bronstein. A native of Meadville, Pa., Ms. Stone, 45, appears on the cover of the September 2003 issue of Movieline's Hollywood Life magazine. She is perhaps best known for her role in the controversial 1992 film "Basic Instinct." She also co-starred in the 1990 action movie "Total Recall," which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former Mr. Universe. In a semantic irony, Schwarzenegger announced on Aug. 6, 2003, his entry into the recall election in California. He will be one of the candidates seeking to replace Gov. Gray Davis on Oct. 7, 2003. A spokesman for the developing Broadway production of "Bobbi Boland," Nancy Hasty's play about a former beauty queen, confirmed a published report that Farrah Fawcett is in discussions for the title role. The Texas native, who shot to stardom as one of the original "Charlie's Angels" in the 1970s, declined comment. Playbill On-Line had previously reported that David Esbjornson will direct the play – about a desperate former Miss Florida – for Broadway. The 2003 Miss Pennsylvania Pageant, held in Nazareth, Pa., on July 12, 2003, will be aired on the PCN cable network in most parts of the state of Pennsylvania at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 8, 2003. It will be replayed on Aug. 10 at 2 pm. Check local listings. Miss Three Rivers, Candace Mari Otto, was named Miss Pennsylvania 2003 and will compete in the 2003 Miss America Pageant on Sept. 20. Amy Robach, a former Miss Gwinnett County and competitor in the Miss Georgia system, has taken a weekday anchor position at MSNBC. She will be seen beginning in autumn 2003. On the Web: The August issue of Critical Beauty e-zine (www.missuniversecritic.com) features interviews with the first and only Miss Afghanistan, Zorah Daoud; Retha Oelofsen, Miss Namibia Universe 1998; and Maria Cristina de la Vega, the famous Spanish-speaking interpreter for Miss Universe from 1985 to 1999.
Actor, comic and show business legend Bob Hope, whose globe-trotting shows to entertain U.S. troops featured generations of beauty queens, died on July 27, 2003. Hope, who turned 100 in May, was born Leslie Townes Hope in Eltham, England. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with his family during his childhood and in 1920 became a U.S. citizen. He later had a career that spanned more than 70 years in vaudeville, radio, film, and television. But it was his long relationship with the USO military shows and American television broadcasting network NBC, which aired his troop shows and Christmas specials, that earned him fame and made him a beloved figure to Americans. During these appearances, many pageant winners pleased the audiences and troops with jokes and songs alongside Hope, among them California native Louise LaPlanche, who was Miss Catalina 1939 and the older sister of Miss America 1941, Rosemary LaPlanche; Miss America 1966, Debra Irene Bryant; Miss World 1969, Eve Von Rueber Staier; Miss USA 1983, Julie Lynne Hayek; and Mona Grudt, Miss Universe 1990. He also had a longtime relationship with the London-based Miss World Pageant. It was at the 1970 pageant when a women's liberation anti-pageant protest group marred the contest with flour ink and smoke bombs. Hope fled with the semi-finalists but later returned after the disorder to continue with the pageant and then helped crown the first black Miss World, Jennifer Josephine Hosten of Grenada. He later remarked, "Anyone who would try to break up an affair as wonderful as this has got to be on some kind of dope." Hope's most famous and longest-lasting relationship with a pageant winner was with actress Dorothy Lamour, Miss New Orleans 1931, who starred with him in 1947's "My Favorite Brunette" and in seven of the famed "Road" movies with Hope and entertainer Bing Crosby. TV host Tom Bergeron, known for his work on "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Hollywood Squares," will be the master of ceremonies at the Miss America Pageant on Sept. 20, 2003. The pageant has had a large and diverse array of hosts in recent years. Fitness instructor Mike Fifrick, who has trained some of the leading beauty queens and models in the United States, has announced his engagement to Jeni Ampualam, a native of Indonesia. The wedding is planned for June 2004.
PNB photographer Joe Whiteko is quoted in an online pageant story by Holly Yan of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at www.ajc.com. Heather French Henry, who was Miss America 2000, gave birth to her second child, Taylor Augusta Henry, on Independence Day Weekend 2003 in Louisville, Ky. She is married to Kentucky Lt. Gov. Steve Henry. Patricia Simmons, who was Miss Georgia USA 2000, gave birth to daughter Jordyn Patsy Simmons, on July 6, 2003. This is the first child of Ms. Simmons – who competed in 2000 as Patti Dunn – and husband Brennon Simmons.
