Patsy Ramsey, the former Miss West Virginia whose life and reputation were ruined by the unsolved murder of her daughter, died June 24, 2006, in suburban Atlanta. She died from a recurrence of ovarian cancer that was first diagnosed in 1993. On Dec. 26, 1996, Mrs. Ramsey and her husband, John, reported the kidnapping of their daughter, JonBenet, from the family home in Boulder, Colo. The child was later found strangled and beaten in the basement of the house. JonBenet, blond and pretty, had competed in beauty contests for a few weeks, and televised footage of her in adult-style costumes onstage led to bizarre and unsubstantiated speculation about the family. Authorities initially focused on the Ramseys as suspects, although years later officials concluded that an intruder was the more likely killer. But supermarket tabloids and some television shows portrayed the Ramseys in the ugliest terms, blaming them for the alleged sexualization of their daughter and repeating claims that they were murderers. Despite a lack of any proof, that stigma haunted Mrs. Ramsey for the remainder of her life. The couple soon moved back to suburban Atlanta, where John Ramsey had roots. Patsy Ramsey will be buried beside her daughter in Marietta, Ga. Christie Hageman of Billings was crowned Miss Montana 2006 on June 17, 2006. She will compete at Miss America. A former Miss Texas contestant faces felony charges for allegedly having sex with a student. Amy McElhenney, 25, a Spanish teacher at Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas, was arrested May 25, 2006. She is accused of having sex with an 18-year-old male student. She reportedly admits an inappropriate relationship but denies it led to sexual relations. The case has raised concern in some quarters because the alleged victim is 18 and therefore above the age of consent. Many feel that makes the law unreasonably harsh, because Ms. McElhenney could get many years in prison if convicted. But Texas, like some other localities, forbids sexual relations between teachers and students regardless of age. Teacher involvement with a student is considered an abuse of the teacher's position of authority. Analysts say the likelihood that Ms. McElhenney will get a long sentence if convicted is slight.
