Her father is singer Chris De Burgh, known for the song "Lady in Red." She succeeds Miss World 2002, Azra Akin, who was the first Turkish titleholder in the pageant's history. Miss World, the oldest continuously operating international beauty contest, was being held for the first time in mainland China. It was the most prestigious pageant ever staged in China, a country that for decades after the 1949 Communist Revolution banned beauty contests and other parts of the beauty culture. Among the judges were international film star Jackie Chan, "Sex and the City" author Candace Bushnell and Miss World 2001, Agbani Darego of Nigeria. The publicity for the event and for the Chinese hosts was almost uniformly good. Pageant director Julia Morley, widow of Miss World founder Eric Morley, announced immediately after the event that China would host the next year's competition, though no city was mentioned. The public relations success made up for the debacle of the previous year, when the contest chose Nigeria as a venue and got tangled up in the political and religious tensions in the country. In that memorable season of 2002, several contestants boycotted the pageant to protest the death sentence imposed on a woman in a Muslim region who had given birth to a child out of wedlock. Muslim extremists, in turn, boycotted the pageant as immoral. Violence flared in parts of Nigeria, and the pageant participants fled back to London, where the contest was eventually held. The woman's death sentence was later lifted.
