The Miss America Pageant shown on Sept. 20, 2003, was the least watched in history, according to ratings released by Nielsen Media Research three days later. The pageant was once a TV blockbuster, but its ratings have been sliding for years, and the decline has been dramatic in the past decade. As usual, the latest Miss America competition employed "new" gimmicks a reality show tie-in and instant announcements of special event winners. But these things simply showed the lack of originality afflicting Miss America, because they have already been done by other pageants. The latest figures led to speculation that Miss America might disappear from network television altogether. But pageant officials and ABC-TV emphasized the upside, noting that the pageant beat its competition for the night.
