Ms. Revels won the Talent Award for singing "Stormy Weather." This year's Miss World extravaganza was beset by problems from the outset when it was learned that Nigeria would host the 2002 pageant. Several contestants said they would boycott the pageant to protest a death sentence against a young woman in Nigeria's northern Islamic states for bearing a child out of wedlock. The Nigerian government vowed to intervene and prevent the stoning of Amina Lawal Kurmani, 31, and national officials pleaded for the pageant to stay. Then, as Muslims began to protest the competition for its alleged immorality, the event was shifted from November to Dec. 7 to avoid conflicting with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. But Muslim rioting became more violent after a Nigerian writer defending the pageant made a comment that the Muslim Prophet Muhammad might have wanted to marry one of the contestants. The rioters, claiming their religion had been insulted, went on a deadly rampage, mostly against Nigeria's Christians. Pageant officials hurriedly decided to move the pageant from Abuja, Nigeria, to London, where the competition was born in 1951. In a sign of the controversy that has dogged Miss World in recent years, the pageant was not telecast in Britain. Ms. Revels' appointment as the U.S. representative raised eyebrows in her home country. She was originally crowned Miss North Carolina in the Miss America system in summer 2002, but soon resigned after her ex-boyfriend revealed he had taken topless photos of her. Ms. Revels, who claimed the photos were taken without her consent, reconsidered after giving up the crown and fought a series of court battles for the right to represent her home state at the September 2002 Miss America Pageant. After she lost in court, she was picked for Miss World by the pageant's new U.S. franchisee. ---- Dari Maximova of Germany won the title of Supermodel of the World in the Dominican Republic on Dec. 7, 2002. With the Miss World Pageant having abandoned Nigeria due to Muslim rioting, an official in the Muslim part of the country has called for the killing of a journalist who wrote that the Islamic Prophet Muhammad would have been willing to marry one of the contestants. The remark in a newspaper set off the rioting, though most observers described it as more pretext than provocation. The official's threat is similar to the death sentence pronounced by Iran against writer Salman Rushdie in 1989, allegedly because of anti-Islamic "blasphemy." Rushdie, who claimed that the real reason for the sentence was his criticism of Iranian leaders, was not killed, but he had to remain in hiding for some time. The Nigerian reporter is said to be in hiding now. Miss Canada International, Lynsey Bennett, has decided to re-enter the rescheduled Miss World contest now that it has been moved from Nigeria to London. Her mother is claiming that Ms. Bennett lost more than 10 pounds during her two weeks in Nigeria due to substandard conditions at the hotel. The Canadian press is locked in a media frenzy surrounding the situation, and Ms. Bennett has been on the front page of all of Canada's major daily papers. Columnists are divided in their support, with virtually all applauding Ms. Bennett's choice to withdraw from Miss World, but some calling her two-faced for hoping to re-enter the contest. It will instead be held Dec. 7 in London. The choice of Nigeria, home of the reigning Miss World, was controversial from the start, and lately had led to bloodshed in mostly Muslim northern Nigeria. The country's more radical Muslims object to the pageant itself, while human rights critics said the Muslim region's oppression of women made Nigeria an unacceptable venue. London is where the Miss World Pageant was founded in 1951, and was its only venue for decades. The American Queen Pageant has announced that the following women have been selected to represent their states at the National American Queen Pageant in July of 2003. Rioters in mostly Muslim parts of Nigeria have burned churches in protest of the Miss World Pageant, which is to be held Dec. 8, 2002, in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. Meanwhile, several contestants from abroad are boycotting the pageant because of mistreatment of women in the Muslim areas. The situation is a public relations dilemma both for Nigeria and for Miss World. After each of the ladies announced her name and hometown, they were all given a quick opportunity to show off their gowns. In the traditional format, 12 semi-finalists were then named, who proceeded to compete in evening gown again. This was followed by a 90-second onstage chat, and then the swimsuit competition. This year's swimsuit competition allowed the contestants to wear two-piece swimsuits for the first time, an option most of the semi-finalists took advantage of while floating onstage to the rhythm of "Try Again." Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2001, Erin Abrahamson, entertained the crowd during a late interval with the song "A Moment Like This." The first runner-up was Miss Flevoland, Saskia van der Molen, and the second runner-up was Miss Friesland, Nadine de Vries. Ms. Boulogne competed earlier in 2002 for the title of Miss Universe Netherlands 2002, which was won by Kim Kötter, Miss Universe's 10th runner-up. For now, she seems disinclined to take part in the Miss World 2002 boycott. The pageant received little coverage due to severe weather, the recent death of the Dutch queen's husband and a pageant scandal at the Zuid-Holland level. Carlisle, 21, of Jacksonville was crowned Miss Arkansas USA 2003 on Oct. 26, 2002, four months after being named third runner-up and the preliminary swimsuit winner at the 2002 Miss Arkansas America Pageant in Hot Springs. Two of the biggest pageant stories of the year 2002 were married in bizarre fashion on Oct. 27, when dethroned Miss North Carolina Rebekah Revels announced she would represent the United States in the controversial 2002 Miss World Pageant in Nigeria. Ms. Revels drew sympathy after losing her crown over topless photos allegedly taken against her will. Then she tangled unsuccessfully in court to get the crown back and compete at Miss America. Her participation at Miss World may put her image at risk, however. The 2002 Miss World Pageant has sparked a boycott because of brutal treatment of women by local Islamic governments in Nigeria. The boycott continues to grow, and media coverage has been favorable. But this decision shows a flair for publicity that may stand Ms. Revels in good stead as she pursues an entertainment career. The crowning of Dzeljla Glavovic as Miss Earth 2002 on Oct. 20, 2002, in the Philippines caused an open protest by some other contestants. They alleged that Ms. Glavovic, 19, who is from Bosnia and Herzegovina, was given the answer to the final question. She edged out 20-year-old Winfred Omwakwe of Kenya, whom many of the contestants considered the real winner. After the pageant, some of them declared their support for the Kenyan and denounced the Bosnian. They also alleged that Ms. Glavovic failed to participate in the environmental activities that are the foundation of the pageant. The final question was "Which is more important in your life -- the sunrise or the sunset?" Ms. Glavovic chose the sunrise. She later denied any impropriety and vowed to remain on good terms with her rivals and have a productive reign. Marie-Aimée Bergicourt, 23, was crowned Miss Mauritius in Port-Louis on Oct. 19, 2002. Outgoing titleholder, Karen Alexandre will represent the Indian Ocean paradise in Miss World in Nigeria on Dec. 7. Miss South Africa, Vanessa Carreira, will not participate in this year's controversial Miss World Pageant. The official reason was a scheduling conflict. The Miss South Africa Pageant is set for Dec. 8, 2002, only one day after the the rescheduled Miss World competition, and South African pageant organizers said she would need to stay home. But it is known that Ms. Carreira was critical of the persecution of women in certain parts of Nigeria. That persecution has caused some contestants to openly boycott Miss World and has created a wave of negative publicity.
