Lone Star 8

Kandace Krueger of Texas won the Miss USA title on March 2, 2001, in Gary, Ind. It was the eighth time the Lone Star State had produced a Miss USA, but the first time since 1995, when Chelsi Smith captured the title on her way to the Miss Universe crown.

The first runner-up was Liane Angus of the District of Columbia and the second runner-up was Tiffany Fallon of Georgia. Other finalists were Larissa Meek of Missouri and Gina Giacinto of Nevada. Other semifinalists were Lisa Tollett of Tennesee, Yanaiza Alvarez of Rhode Island, Cortney Amaretta Phillips of Oklahoma, Kenya Howard of Michigan and Endia Li Abrante of Oregon.

Monica Palumbo of North Carolina was chosen Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. Megan Gunning of Maryland won the Clairol Natural Instincts Style Award.

The pageant was being held for the first time in Gary, and much of the pre-pageant news coverage concerned the Rust Belt city's efforts to erase its image as poor and crime-ridden. The effort was controversial, even in Gary itself, but the pageant proved entertaining and the exposure was undoubtedly positive.
